HP TouchPad and WiFi; how to show the MAC Address for the HP TouchPad? How I Did It

in Tablet PC Discussion
If you are one of the lucky ones to have purchased a recently discontinued HP TouchPad, you may be having a heck of a time getting it on your wireless network ... especially if you have Mac Address Filtering enabled on your router!

Here is what you will have to do to figure out the MAC Address of the HP TouchPad:

  • First, sorry to say you will have to TURN OFF Mac Address filtering (temporarily) when you first setup the TouchPad -- it simply will not allow you to do ANYTHING else until you have registered with HP via WiFi! And, you can't easily discover the MAC Address before completing the registration (unless you're a geek and know how to use WireShark or some other WiFi packet sniffer).
  • Also, it does not appear to support WPA2 Encryption from the factory; temporarily downgrade your WiFi Router to WPA Personal if you are setup for WPA2
  • Register the device using WiFi via the default setup process that runs at first boot
  • Once registered, you can do the following to get the MAC Address:
    • Click the "Home" button (bottom, center below the screen)
    • Click the Up Arrow icon in the bottom right corner
    • You should now see a menu with "APPS DOWNLOADS FAVORITES SETTINGS"
    • Click settings
    • Click Device Info
    • Some basic info is displayed about the device; click "More info" at the bottom
    • "Hardware" tab should be highlighted at the top and you will see the MAC Address beside the label "WiFi" ... it will probably start with: 00:1d:fe
Remember to turn your MAC Address filtering back on once you have entered the MAC Address into your router!
